Pulley System
The Main Sheet (line) on a sailboat is used to haul in the main sheet with
great force in heavy winds.
The physics determining the force ratio for a pulley is similar to that
of levers and gears.
In this example 4 lines pull on the same 400 pound weight, therefore the
force reqired to lift the weight, would be 100 pounds. The line would be
pulled 4 times the distance traveled by the weight, or the sailboat's boom.
